The Overdrive tends to get stuck and doesn't seem to want to shift towards the last gear (3rd or 4th?). The engine gets revved up to 3.000 or a bit more RPM before it shifts to O/D and rather roughly. When I push the O/D button in the shifter stick, it sometimes frees and goes into OD and RPMs thus go down but not all the time. The stock Tranny was rebuilt in early 2007 with moderate mileage ever since. A few weeks ago the tranny was shifting roughly, especially from 1st to 2nd, issue which was solved when I applied an antifriction oil additive.
Q: Could this be a simple maintenance or an A/T technician issue?
Now, if it turns out the A/T needs to be serviced, and the cost to repair vs. downgrading to a C-6 tranny is the same (I believe it would be the case, for what I’ve heard), is it worth the swap? (my first Bronco had a C-6 on a 300 BB6 engine and ran even with very little ATF due to leaks). I think an AOD tranny is harder to find down here...
Have you pulled codes to see if there are any 600 series codes present? The 600 series codes are E4OD specific and could yield a more accurate location for the problem. E4OD's really need fluid/filter changes at regular intervals. Not like the old C6 and AOD models that seemed to run forever with little maintenance.
As to the swap, the C6 is shorter and would most likely require axle length mods. and you would of course lose your overdrive. Otherwise, it could certainly be done. (Personally I would seriously consider losing the OD in favor of a more reliable transmission than the E4OD... but that has to do with my experience with the E4OD).
I have a AOD. I'm putting the truck in D until I get up to around 55 mph, then I shift it manually into D Overdrive. I think it's just getting old that way, It's tired of always running in D Overdrive from the gitgo. I'm saving for a new transmission.
This might sound stupid but it worked for me, pull the electrical plug on the side of the trans, clean all the contacts and plug it back in, I have done this to 3 differant vehicles having OD problems and it worked on all 3. Water and dirt can get in there and you lose connection and the problems start.

A very sound idea indeed. Might as well check the condition of the connection between the MLPS and the wiring harness while you are at it.
Have you checked the tranny oil level lately? Rebuilt transmisions tend to drink up a little more than the specified quantity a little while after the overhaul.
A filter change and 16 quarts of ATF certainly will not hurt it. I have found that the E4OD shifting is also a function of the engine tune up. The better the engine runs the lower the shift points and better the shifts.
