Post Amateur Mechanic looking for pointers

Hi,

I’m an amateur mechanic who hasn’t an opportunity to work on older engines yet. I just recently bought a 1972 F100 with a 302 boss engine and I’m trying to find a good source to learn about my engine... Basically I’m looking for a how to guide on what part does what and why… Thanks for reading
-Andrew

Andrew, First thing to know, Ford never put a 302 Boss engine in a truck. You have a transplant.

302 boss in a truck

In about 1985 i was working with this guy who asked what i would charge to help him replace the engine in his shortbed. I told him 50 bucks as he had the tools and a garage to do it in. His deceased father had been a mechanic ,but he had never took an interest in it.He bought a 302 longblock and we started swapping everything over and put it in and when we fired it up i heard a noise and i told him to shut it down.i pulled the timing cover back off and found that the fuel pump eccentric had shaved the back of the cover . I marked the eccentric and ground it down . I also had to drop the oilpan to clean the shavings out and got lucky as none of the shavings made it into the oil pump. This guy was pissed at the place he bought the engine from and went up there to cuss them out ,but there were three people in line in front of him ordering engines . Right as it was his turn to speak to the rep. a guy came from the back of the shop mad as a hornet saying " Where is that damn 302 boss engine we had sitting right there ." Well that friend of mine just said that it was a pleasure doing business with you guys and abruptly walked out with a smile on his face. That truck would run like a scalded dog too. I can only remember that it was a baby blue bump shortbed.

have to hit the books. i cant stress that enough. i myself hate reading, but when it comes to cars i take such an interest and really enjoy learning everything i can. it amazes me how things work, and i get a feeling of reward if i can fix something. it also amazes me that not long ago we were getting around with a horse and buggy, and now we have remote start, fuel injection, and heated seats, cant live without those heated seats. lol. and if we get hungry we just go to the drive thru and order a number 2, instead of chasing after your food with a spear and then the thing gets away and you dont eat today, but perhaps tomorrow. lol
