after 4 beautiful years of service the excursion got some water in the tank, the local diesel mechanic told me to put a white bottle of power service in..change the fuel filter and run it till the tank is empty. Fill it with fresh fuel and if the sputtering stops change the fuel filter again and it might be good. Well all is good except when I was about to shut it off the service engine soon light popped on. I know this could be anything but....the truck is running perfect..no difference. Any ideas??? simple or could the water have done some dammage????...I will hang up and wait for your reply.
We would be throwing darts with a blindfold on with out the codes being read. What part of WI is Dousman in? Maybe a member is near you with a good scanner to pull the codes
I'm curious why you didn't ask for suggestions here before visiting a mechanic for the water in fuel issue?
Anyway, Jay is right. With the truck running well, you'll need to get the codes read first. Since the Ex has the CA emissions stuff, maybe you're lucky enough that it's a code the free scans at the local parts stores can pick up. Otherwise it's time to visit a diesel mechanic who has the proper equipment, or to hope a fellow forum member with a scanner lives close by and volunteers to scan your truck.
Could be something as simple as a glow plug code. There's no way to know without the scan.

No offense meant, I was just wondering. You didn't run it out of fuel, did you? The tank is now full? How many miles have you driven it since the SES light came on?
If the water in the fuel hurt something, you would be able to tell without the aid of the dash light. It would run rough or be obvious. The SES light is not related to the water in the fuel unless you did something crazy like run the truck out of diesel trying to empty the tank. I don't think you did because you're not describing the knocking and noises associated with running out of fuel.
Drive it around a bit and see if you can find any symptoms. Try the free code scan too. If the truck feels like it's running good, I wouldn't worry about putting a couple of miles on it.
Well that is nowhere near me so the group in Mpls won't be much help in person anyway. Chris has you pointed in the right direction I think. Keep us posted
