Fuel Gauge Problem

My Father has a 1988 Ranger V6,when he fills up gas tank the gauge shows full but soon after goes back to empty.Could this be gauge problem or sending unit going bad?If it is sending unit how hard is it to replace?
Thanks,Dave

Fuel Gauge Problem

its most likely the sending unit. Its fairly common. The variable resistance piece of metal that is on the sending unit tends to wear out. If you pull It out it becomes pretty obvious what the problem is. On your truck im not sure if its part of the fuel pump too. On the carborated rangers you can just buy the sending unit. It costs bout 100 bucks from ford but since yours might have a fuel pump attached its most likely gonna be more. Just to make sure its the sending unit you can unplug the sending unit wire on the tank and ground it with a test light. Turn the key to the on position and the testlight should pulse. Also the fuel gauge should slowly rise. Hope this helps some. Im sure somebody knows if the sending unit is an integral part of the in tank pump.

Yep, it's part of the pump and remember it's easier to pull the bed instead of dropping the tank.
