Engine races after running awhile

When I start my truck cold it idles fine until I shift into gear at which point it will usually stall unless I give it gas. Now that doesn't happen if I start it warm but I'm finding the idle gets almost unmanageably high after I've been running for an extended period. Like to the point where I've got to flatten the brake pedal to keep the truck from taking off on its own. Hasn't been an issue yet but I'd like to even things out. Someone once told me the stall was because of a vacuum leak but there's very little left to cause one, all the stock emissions crap is gone. Anyone else have this issue?

When a choke is set up properly it will have a fast idle when the engine's cold at first startup then drops back down after it has warmed up a bit. Check the fast idle cam on the side of the carb an make sure it isn't sticking or binding. Make sure the throttle return spring isn't stretched and has reasonable tension and brings the throttle closed when released. For that matter, check all the throttle linkage for sticking or binding.
Have you checked the timing lately? Is the distributor hold down clamp tight?
