I sold my Car!!! FINALY! Sold it to my Cousin for 4000, he is going to be makeing payments of 400 a month, all of that goes to my truck --( 77 F-100 Coustom Shortbox with 302 and 3 on the tree)--. What sould I do with it? I know I want to take it to a shop and have them go through everything and tell me what needs to be fixed, and what I can fix myself. After that I am buying a Edelbrock 600, Intake, cam, Exhaust ( What kind ? ). And remember this is NOT going to be for off road, I want about the same gas mileage as I have now but more performance... Looks come last in line. I am geting the wheels and tires of my choice, I want somthing that looks (Drag) but is not.. In other words, Regular street tires in front and deep fat tires in the rear. I just dont know what Size to get? I seen some 60 Series tires at discount tire that looked good, But I cant seem to picture them on my truck.? So I need your advice on performance?
Also I really want a Pro's and Con's list about the Automatic Tranny and 3 on the tree. because I dont really like the 3 on the tree...
i have 8 inch rims with 245/60 15 tires and 10's on the back with 295/50 15. next time i get rims im gonna get 12's for the back and probably 315s or bigger but this is for a 81 f150. please don't put 20 inch ricer rims on your truck.exhaust go with headers and 2 1/2 dual exhaust. if anybody says this is too big they are wrong. my 351w is eventually gonna have 3 inch duals. switch out that 3 spd standard for a 4 speed outta a mustang (without bull low) or a t5. i'm not sure what work is involved with driveshafts and shifter
ok finaly somone who knows what I want out of performance. NO to ricer rims, hate them, like I said I like the DRAG look, you dont happen to have a pic of your truck do you? And about the Exhaust, my friends stang had 2 1/2" and he dyno'd it and put 2" and it mad a much better improvement because of the cam and lifters he had? So I was told it depends on the cam and lifters?
Also what you said about the 4 speed out of a stang and said __(without bull low? or a t5)__? Is it a manual or automatic? I am planing on buying a shift kit from Lokar performance, and all of the accesories needed(floor mount) but I wasnt sure as to go with an automatic or manual tranny?, I was told it is harder to install an automatic tranny. How much would this tranny convertion cost me?
i was talking about standard trannys, not a aod, i put a auto overdrive into my truck and it works ok but would be more fun with a standard tranny. i have pictures but i don't have a scanner to do it
ok Well..... I have made up my mind, from what I can tell with the job I just got and all I am going to be wanting an automatic tranny..... I know there not as great, but what do you think a decent one is, I want the most performance and fun I can get out of it, so what auto tranny should I go with?
As far as headers go, there was just no way to make the hooker or headman brands work with this truck! Everything I looked at interfered with the frame crossover where the motor mounts rested.
I ended up buying a nice stainless steel shorty set made for a mustang from someone on Ebay. They fit very nicely!
When it comes to tires and rims, do your best to match the outer diameter! The Ford Twin I beam front suspension and a truck that is lower in the front leads to a lot of wondering at highway speeds.
A four speed tranny would be nice in your truck. Mine has a C6. Try to find another truck in the salvage yard with the four speed and then you have ready access to all the parts. Changeing the tranny would be the last thing I'd do btw. It is there. It works and will not interfere with anyother changes you might try.
