heres my question. ive got a 351m that hasnt been running real great.symptoms include lack of power, hard starts, backfiring through carb etc.well first thing i done was replace timing chain and gears(got some questions there too) still acting up so i got to checking the vacuum advance and the diaphram was busted so i replaced that. now when you apply vacuum the rod coming from the advance wont move anything in the distributor.im puzzled?what to do now?
i pulled the vacuum line feeding the vacuum advance and sucked on it nothing was happening inside the distributor(the rod coming from vacuum advance to distributor wasnt advancing the timing and single port bye the way

You might not be generating enough suction. Try giving it a little push while sucking. (This conversation is going down hill fast).
Plug wires and insufficient fuel could also be involved.
Also with a timing light and the engine running you should see a change when you pull off the vacuum hose.
ok im guessing that the problem is internal ,something in the distributor siezed up or something. and not allowing the vacuum advance to do its jobtried moving with screwdriver wont budge any ideas durasparkll not for sure what model motor-truck is 1980heads dated 1975

It might be rusted in place. High voltage electric corona tends to weld things together. I seen it on the centrifugal weights. Maybe a good soaking with WD40.
ill try some wd if that dosent work is there any thing i can do to make my truck run decent without the vacuum advance and the ported vacuum sealed off at carb

You would be surprised how many cars are running around without vacuum advance. I find ruptured diaphrams all the time. Did you check your centrifigal advance or try to remove the plate?
