Question about New Truck

On the window sticker of the new 2010 F-150 I just bought it says locking removable tailgate with lift assist. Just what is this lift assist?

It makes the tailgate easier to close (and hold open), much like the large spring above your garage door.

It's also built into the tailgate so you can't see it

and I know the f150 have had it since 04 at least
