I almost forgot about this, years ago I put one in my 82 F100(now the "F350" in my sig.) The truck was radio and lighter delete, but, it was pre-wired for the lighter, just pop the cap out, install the lighter socket, and plug the wires in. Those wires hanging under the dash are the ones you need. If you want switched power, you are going to need to run a new power feed.
I also ran a second power socket under the glovebox many years ago, just hooked into the same circuit as the lighter, there's more than enough amperage capacity on the circuit to handle most things you are going to plug in there.
So, I picked up a lighter this weekend. A generic deal, but it said for Ford cars/trucks on it. The wires attach properly, and the lighter works fine, but it doesn't fit. The body of the lighter itself is too wide for the hole in the ashtray. There are threads on the back of the lighter, but nothing to screw it into. Does anyone know if they make a lighter with some kind of nut or something on the FRONT end, so that I could put the lighter behind the mounting plate and screw a retainer nut or bezel on the front to hold it in place? otherwise, I guess I'll have to pull the ashtray and bust out the Dremel to enlarge the hole.
Maybe. The lighter was $6, and Advance is 2 miles from my house. The nearest junkyard is 45 minutes away, and i have no idea what kind of stock they have.
Does anyone have a pic of their stock lighter in the ashtray?
The thin inner unscrews from that outer piece. Put the inner in your ashtray and then slide the outer sleeve on and screw it on the inner. That is a protective housing that acts to ground the lighter.
You know, I thought that might be the case, but didn't want to crank on it too much. I'll give it another shot tonight. It's only $6, so if I screw it up, no harm
Sure enough, came right apart. Installed no problem, but then I blew the stupid fuse trying to wire it up blind I have plenty of spares, so no worries, and it's working fine Thanks for everyone's help.
HI. I just joined, and really appreciate finding this info on cig. lighters.
I just have one more question: How do you get the darn unit out of the ashtray?
Or did I miss that part, skimming the posts too fast?
There is one wire that feels like it is broken off, but I don't know which one. I didn't feel a boot, but the other connection did seem to have a "bump" to it, so I'm guessing that's the boot and the broken wire should have the space connnector. I got it to wiggle a little, but was afraid to pull too hard, not knowing if it was supposed to come outor if it was hardwired.
I guess I"ll go try pulling harder with bigger pliers this time, and see if I can fix the wire without removing the unit - if I can find the rest of the wire!
(Mine looks just like phurst's, except it's in a lot better shape. - No offense intended, phurst),
Thanks

Reason: Correction and addition
Replacing the whole unit might make your life a lot easier. You can actually see what you're doing Both of my wires had plenty of slack, so if your ground is busted, you should be able to crimp on a whole new spade terminal. Otherwise, since it's the ground, you could just run a new one.
