Hi I am looking into an aftermarket tranny cooler for my 97 F250 which has an E4OD and 5.8L. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations and information on install as this is new to me. Thanks for any suggestions.
Pretty straight forward, if you buy one new it comes with most of the hardware to hook it up and mount it. The ONLY thing that i like to do differently is that i dont run the trans through the tranny heater at all (aka the RAD) i just put plugs in those ports and run the rubber line off the ends of the steel lines. The new cooler will not come with the plugs, and i cant remember if it came with female barbes to connect the steel line flair fitting to the rubber lines. (I did have to gently bend the ends of the steel line straight iirc) Some would likely just slip the rubber over the end of the steel and clamp it but thats just asking for trouble in the future IMHO.
IMHO, it's best to retain the in-radiator cooler but install the aux one upstream. Watch the splices closely for leaks and double-clamping doesn't hurt either.
Retain the radiator cooler function, in cold weather if you run only a external cooler you will not reach operating temps and cause its own problems with the trans. Unless you tow during the summer in Death valley, keep the rad. cooler in line.
