Well, it's snowing here in Nebraska so I used the 4x today. I noticed that the front end or transfer case is noisy when in 4x4HI. I noticed that is makes noise on a dry patch of pavement and then instantly quiets when you drive over a snowy patch.
The front end probaly needs regreased. (no idea when the last time was.) Do you think a standard "front end service" will take care of the problem or do I need to look elsewhere.
Last year it made none of these noises and would also run quietly on complety dry pavement (didn't do this for very long)
On a side note, I accidently drove for about 2 months this summer with the hubs locked in. Could this have caused the outside of the driver's tire to wear excessivly or do I need an alignment?
Driving with the hubs locked (but not in 4WD) is not only good, but recommended by Ford. It keeps everything lubed and wear-polishes the gears. You shouldn't drive on dry pavement for more than a few feet, but if the driveline is noisier than you think it should be, check all the fluids & grease the front bearings/spindles.
