When looking from the rear, sometimes they stamped the #(44,60 etc.) on the casting web in the lower right hand corner of the pig. this is just to lower right of the diff cover.

I've heard they also stamp the date and the bill of materials on the long tube portion.

A Dana 60 front axle doesn't have ball joints they got a king pin stud with a 4 bolt cover and a bearing on the bottom. Here's a pic.
