Thanks for the replies to my previous 4.6 post. The sohc engine has one cam for each head and the dohc has two per bank correct? I assume the dohc is a 4 valve but I'm unclear about where and when the two and three valve engines evolved. The dohc seems to be more complicated than the others so would it be a potential maintenance headache if used for an everyday driver? I don't know anything about the modulars so I appreciate your help. Thanks again
Lefty
The first 4V DOHC modular was in '91/'92 IIRc in the Mark VIII as was the first SOHC 2V 4.6L in the GMQ and Crown vic. The 2V 5.4L came along in '97 and the DOHC in '00 in the Navigators and the 3V modular engines came out in '04, along the way the DOHC 4V's were developed in specialty Mustangs and various other Lincoln models. I see no reason why a DOHC 4.6L would be a problem it has been around in one form or another for nearly 20 years now.

A small correction; the 4.6 DOHC was introduced in the '93 Mark VIIIs which was in the dealer's showrooms in '92. The blocks and heads were reportedly produced by the same facility that cast the engines for Ferrari.
My own experience with the DOHc has me convinced that it is one of the finest powerplants ever produced by Ford. I have nearly 200,000 miles on my Mark and it does not make noise, smoke or use oil. With no mods it kicks butt on the streets and roads when I ask it to. I have the 5.4 DOHC in my Navigator and it's even better.
If you read the posts you will find that the SOHCs are very good but have way more problems than the DOHC engines.
The loudest parts in my Mark is the fuel injectors and I guess they are just getting tired. But they're still quiet.
My sons and I have had 4 Marks, 2 Cobras and the Navigator with the DOHC engines and never a problem with the engines.
