transmission fluid exchange

Hey all, my grandpa has a 1969 Ranger 360ci with a 3-speed automatic transmission.

A few weeks ago we were checking the fluids and noticed the trans. fluid lookd like a strawberry milkshake. It seems to be water somehow, but I was thinking of coolant but then again think if coolant mixed it would turn it a different color.

Anyway, we would like to change the transmission fluid. All I saw underneath the truck was a drainpan that looked hard to get at some of the bolts for it, but I performed a search and read something about draining the torque converter and the bottom of the radiator.

Where should I be looking for these drains, how much fluid do we need and what parts should we be looking for (all I can think of is a pan gasket).

thanks a ton

most painless way to do it is disconnect the drivers side cooling line from the radiator, shove a hose over the end of it and into a bucket, then just start the truck and let it gush into the bucket as you add more into the fill neck till it all comes out clean and bright pink. this is prettymuch what transmission shops do except their machine just moves the fluid in at the same rate it comes out.
so no matter which route you go its not a true "flush"

if you take off that pan you only change a portion of the fluid, and to train the torque converter is a pain because you need to remove an inspection cover from the bellhousing and rotate the motor till you find the right drain bolt,

Joe, of course you are aware that the source of the problem is the tank at the bottom of the radiator that cools the trans fluid. You have to pull the radiator and get it to a shop. You will find transmission fluid in the radiator coolant.
Get on it right away or you will destroy the transmission.

Thanks ya'll.

It does not look like coolant in the fluid, looks like water and looking in the radiator it is very clean and bright green.

That plan you have sounds dangerous because Im sure the fluid will come out faster than you can pour it in the tiny dipstick tube.

It is possible that the fluid id getting hot and foaming. Do you know for sure what type of fluid is in the transmission. Does the transmission run and shift correctly?

Ran the truck today and said it was fine. Back when we first noticed it, I drove it around thinking that getting it hot would burn off the moisture. Didnt work, but it did drive and shift fine, just like normal.

Im not exact on the fluid.. I know its not Type F because we bought a lot of Mercon or Mercon V I think from Valvoline and some Dex III from Shell in there, but its all red fluid.

I'll have to look at it again but I don't remember seeing tiny bubbles, just a strawberry milkshake.
