I have steering wander and everything feels tight. The steering feels like there is no resistence when turning the steering wheel. Could this type of problem be a valve or orfice in the power steering system that is not allowing the proper resistance?
I believe there is a screw you can turn to tighten the resistance at the steering box. You'll need an allen key. That may only be a temporary fix. Others have used aftermarket steering boxes.
I to had bad ball joints on drivers side, replaced them and helped very little. Steering box was definitely an issue, replacing it made a definite improvement. My hubs were stuck in???? who knows what mode keeping the front end engaged ALL the time. I installed a free-spin kit from Dynatrac and problem was solved. Since then my left front caliper locked up on me so now new rotors, calipers, hoses, and pads. Oh yeah lift kit wheels and tires and now I absolutely love driving it b'cuz it doesn't feel like work.
***** joints check twice by Les Schwab and OK, I adjusted the steering box but that only made it so the steering wheel would not return to center after turning.
It act like the hydrolics have more force than needed making it real easy to turn with the slightess pressure on the steering wheel.
I was told. The ball joints are a big problem they need lube. The problem is they stick when you make a steering correction they stick again. New ***** with grease fittings for regular greasing should work.I have not tried it, saving up some money be about $900.
thought this was kind of a joke at first. The search feature is your friend on wandering - there are a TON of threads on steering wander.
By way of recap (I'm a newbie here): look at the ball joints. Replace. I had mine done a couple weeks ago for $584.00. Very good price but had to take it to Baltimore to a heavy duty spring shop for the work (was easy for them). Had them also do the alignment. They had to put a cam in on the upper left ball joint to keep me in positive castor.
I also had the tires "Road force balanced". Google it - it is worth the money. Ended up replacing two tires as they couldn't be brought within "spec: for road force balancing.
I also replaced the front sway-bar end links as the originals were shot in the bushings. Also replaced the sway bar bushing.
Next replaced the rotors with cryo power slots and new pads (Hawk LTS). I am waiting on Rancho 9000 shocks (been backordered for over a month). Once they go on this thing better ride like a cadilac or I'll burn it down. (Rides pretty darned good now - also tightend the steering box a wee bit).
ALL the info and some pretty smart folks are here on the forum. They'll help you out if you do a little bit of searching first.
I have had the problem for 34K miles. I have replaced the sway bar end link, no help except stopped the popping noise on turning. Had the wheel assemblies remove from all the steering rods and turning the wheels by hand there was no hang ups or stiffness. I have talked to Red Top I think that is in the future for me.
My real questionis, is there anything in the power steering system that limited the flow of steering fluid so that there is some resistant in the steering wheel when turning it. My wheel turns so easy that there is no feel at all, only the fact the rig move in a given direction. If I am driving straight and I look out the window to the left my rig turns left even thought I think I am holding it straight, it is that easy to turn.
So is there an orffice or small whole that som how is poorly made and allow more steering fluid throught making it easier to turn the steering wheel, this making the rig feel like it is wandering when in fact your really turning the wheel a very small amount.
