I am looking into picking up an old army 2.5 ton 6x6. I am worried about weight restrictions. How much does a fed-ex or ups truck weight? On residential streets it is posted no " commercial vehicles " over 3 tons. I think the 6x6 is something like 14,000 lbs. Is there a way around this? Any thoughts???? I'm in socal.
check with the dmv In Ohio ANY vehicle wearing historical plates is NOT commercial.
However Barney Fife never reads those rules, and you may have a court battle on your hands. A friend of mine here won that battle over having no logbook with an antique semi, but it cost him vacation time, a lawyer, and of course, money, but he did win.
As for Fed Ex and UPS trucks--depends on which truck. Both companies are using Freightliner built 700 cubic foot walk in trucks with Cummins engines and automatics. (FedEx longer than UPS on those). Those weigh, according to the sticker, 10,000lbs empty, and max load is 6000 lbs. There are larger versions of those, and a variety of older GM/Ford gas chassis walk ins for FedEx, and older Ford chassis walk ins for UPS. Those are a bit lighter.
AFAIK, "local deliveries" don't get hasseled for weight restrictions. Never been an issue in my locations.
Having one parked there on a permanent basis would be quite a different thing methinks....
