I have a 1994 Ranger 2.3l. 170,000KM This morning while driving my tach began to act weirdly and was reading 2000 rpm off. Then within 5 minutes my check engine light came on. The truck seems to be running ruffer ie "idle and gas milage" are these to things just a coincidence or are they linked together? Has anyone ever had ths problem? I have recently changed wires, plugs and fuel pump.
I would suggest checking any work you did on the ignition system and either pull the codes yourself or see if the local parts store will do it for you.
The wrong tach reading points to an ignition system problem since the tach runs off of it and this type of problem would cause a CEL, set a code in the computer and could cause problems with idle and mileage.
I was having the same problem with my 94 Ranger 2.3l 190,000 miles. I pulled into auto zone while the problem was active and had them read the codes. It repeated 111 which I think is exhaust temperature sensor out of range/performance problem. This suggested some sort of misfire in one of the cylinders. Having tuned up the engine recently I trurned to the injectors.
I put in a bottle of Lucas fuel treatment to clean the injectors and I have not had the problem since.
I was a bit lost as to why this would cause the tach to read low but is is connected to the same module that this sensor is so I guess that could be why.
