I have a 1985 Ford 6.9 diesel F250, and once in a while my starter just spins and clanks. Most of the time it starts just fine, by when it spins, there is no way to start it. I move the shifter to neutral allowing the truck to move just a little, then the starter engages.
Does anyone have a recommendation as to where to start looking?
I guess if I pull the starter, I might see the problem. Is the starter easy to get to, and on the bottom of the engine? As you can tell, I know very little.
I am hoping that I can find a shop to do this. It is so hard to find one that I can trust. How heavy is the starter? I hope I have the strength to hold it.
I almost seems that a few teeth are missing off the flywheel/pressure plate (It is an automatic), and that I do not have to replace that.
Check the teeth on the ring gear, you may have a bad spot.
Also possible; with the starter motor removed (10-15 lbs.?) spin the engine around
by hand (use a socket & ratchet on the front crank pulley/dampener) and inspect
the flexplate teeth.
This place is pretty much a self-help forum to avoid paying mechanics for
something that can be done at home. Of course, you're free to take it to a shop
but I'd guess $50-$100 just to look at it and diagnose it.
As stated the starter is light ... I can hold it, you can! (I'm broken)
I pull the glow plugs (or spark plugs on gassers), then use a screwdriver or small prybar and CAREFULLY pry the motor around via the ring gear teeth while checking them out.
If you have someone that can turn the wrench on the crank bolt that is FAR FAR better, It's hard by yourself to do both, turn and watch.
