Power Steering Leak
I just bought an 85 F150 for $600 on craigslist. I've wanted something to play with for a while and I figured now that I have the shop for it, the time is right. It ran like crap when I bought it (hesitating, stalling when you put it in gear) but I have it running ok now. (Still misses on acceleration but it it doesn't die anymore)
I came back from my maiden voyage with it the other day and I noticed that power steering fluid was leaking from my gear box and dripping out where the pitman arm goes in.
My question is is it easier/cheaper the replace the gearbox with one from a junk yard or do they make rebuild kits for these? I'm pretty good with my hands but as for a in depth technical knowledge of wrenching, I still have a lot to learn. Should I just replace the gearbox or rebuild it? The other threads on this forums had a couple different opinions.
Junkyard boxes are a crapshoot, and sometimes they are worse than what you already have.
Rebuilt boxes can be pricey, but they come with a warrentee.
Rebuilding one yourself is doable, if you have decent skills, and access to specialized tools.
