relay question

The glowplugs relay voltages - if your truck is not turbocharged and the relay is at the back of the intake, its big terminal to the passenger side should read 12V, the big terminal towards the driver side should have 12V too

hey guys I copied this from a member and saved it to my computer some time ago, I checked the large posts diagonal from eachother on the relay and recieved voltage from the post toward the driver side but the one close to the passenger side did not read anything it was 0, I also tried with the key on and got the same results, what could this mean?

That would be impossible unless incorrectly hooked up...

The large terminal (input terminal) to the right side (passenger side) is the power from the battery and should have 12v+ at all times, the large terminal (output terminal) on the left side (drivers side) should only have 12v+ when the Glow Plugs are active.

The little terminal (Ignition terminal) with red wire should have 12v+ with keyon, the white wire should be ungrounded when glow plugs are off and grounded WHEN glow plugs are on. Thats how this system works, it's a grounding system.

If you have power to the Input, Power at the Ignition terminal with keyon, unplug the glow plugs at the glow plugs, Attach one lead of a test light to one of the glow Plug connectors and ground the other lead, remove the white wire on the relay and ground the terminal the white wire was on. The test light should light up if the relay is working and glow plug harness is good.

If the relay is bad you DO NOT need to buy the whole controller & relay. a relay off the pre '87 (83-86) will fit and is a bunch cheaper then the controller & relay combo they'll try and sell you for the post '86. (87-94)

Do not use starter solenoids ... They will have a 'S' and 'I' by the small terminals if it's a starter solenoid.

oo I might have said that wrong festus, where the battery input is, I was reading voltage but the other post was not reading with key on how can I find a pre 87 relay, everywhere looked I see relay and controller but was looking for my year/model truck but it was about $170 yikes, I'm going to try and brush the terminals with some sand paper and clean them up going to be a pain leaning over the engine for so long hahah

Yea, they bite where they are ... I put a towel over each fender and lay a piece of plywood across the top so I can lay on it and reach the controller, my back just won't allow me to lean over.

Follow what I said about testing to ensure the relay is in fact bad... Diagnostics BEFORE dollars!

83-86 glow plug relays should be available at your local parts house, just ask for a Glow Plug relay for a 1986 F250/350 Diesel.
