please help with a brake question!!!

Yesterday, my wife was driving her Ranger when the brake line to the truck's rear broke. Suddenly, she had no brakes at all, brake pedal to the floor. Fortunately, a dangerous situation came out okay, but I am concerned because I had the same thing happen on my '87 pickup a few years back. My question: I thought the dual reservoir master cylinder was supposed to prevent this kind of dangerous situation. If one doesn't, then of what value is the dual reservoir system? What changes can a person make to a Ranger to prevent this complete loss of brakes? Thanks.

There wasn't a complete loss of brakes.

She needed to pump the brakes and it wold have stopped with the front IF your description above is accurate.

However, it is possible that the front brakes are non-operative for other reasons.

Sounds like both your vehicles are of the vintage that they need a complete brake system inspection, and replacement of virtually everything that do not pass:

brake lines (metal and flex), etc.
