I'm looking at a '72 351W in a 68 or 69 Cougar. It has the D0OE heads, which I read the controversy between those and the GT40 heads.
Anyways, is the block a worthy block? How about the crank?
I know it has the 2piece rear main seal. Which I believe I can machine to the 1 piece design. Unless there is a difference in the crank?
It’s going in an '84 F250 with the Edelbrock performer cam carb intake package.
I think the '72 351w block has a shorter deck height than the later ones, which can be a PITA when it comes to finding pistons. I have a '69 351 and the (wrong) pistons are @~.02 negative deck - i.e. above the deck surface. Takes very pricey .080" head gaskets to make it right...
thanks for the response. I will certainly check that out, as I was planning to put the .030" over pistons from an '84 351w in the '72 block. And it does sound familar about a deck hieght issue.
Anyone know the specificson the deck hieght changes? Year of changes, block codes, Hieght differences?
That could affect the valve train too as the '84 heads and GT40 head have fixed mounted rockers whereas the '72 has adjustable studs. Hmmm . I did check the push rod lengths, and they appear to be the same. but will need to measure them more accurately.
