what does the control module on a 1984 actually do and what is it connected. I am trying to just get a 351w , 1984 started. I don't seem to be able to find simple directions. Any help will be appreciated. I have rebuilt the engine, which had no wiring at all. I can't find a book that is specific to the 84 351w or small block fords
There were several different versions of engine management controls during those years. Some were simply vacuum controls with a electronic module that fired the coil for the ignition(this was called the duraspark II system).
Some engines had a duraspark III system, which was a fancier ignition module with a few more controls. It fired the coil and also had some control over the timing advance, along with the vacuum controls still on the engine.
The one other system they had was the EECIV system. This is very much related to the later fuel injected systems. It had a full blown engine computer, with a TFI module mounted on the distributor. The TFI module fired the coil, but only from instruction from the main EECIV computer. There were a lot of sensors on the engine, much like a fuel injected engine, but these type engines still ran a carb. The carb had some wires and sensors on it to give throttle position, control the idle, and the fuel mixture.
If your dist has a module mounted to the side of it, you have the EECIV system. If your distributor has a vacuum line going to it, you most likely have the duraspark II system.
