help.........overdrive light on gear shift
can you help me.........for some reason, my 96 bronco shifts into overdrive without me initiating the button on the gear shift.......the OVERDRIVE OFF light then continues to blink, reminding me to turn it off............but i can't turn it off..........i've tried pushing in the button while in PARK, NEUTRAL, DRIVE, while moving, while sitting still...............no luck...........all i can do is turn off the ignition and re-start the engine.............

The blinking light is an indication of a problem with the system, not telling you to shift out of OD. Also, the tranny is supposed to shift into OD on it's own. The button is there for those instances when you don't want it to shift into OD, such as pulling a trailer, etc... The light should be blinking in a pattern which is the numerical code for the problem it is trying to indicate. Post that code and someone should be able to help.

I had the same thing. I went to my buddy who works for ford dealer and he said that is a very bad sign. My choice was to have the tranny rebuilt or get a new one. He told me to opt for the new one which I did. It happens on 70 % of the trannys over 125k miles he said.
After that, my rear end went- geez this truck is costing me more headaches and debt than I expected, but I still Love it.

thanks mrwizard..........do you think this may have something to do with a faltering transmission.........i'm starting to feel a "kick" during the shifting of gears............

The kick should be felt hardest from 1st to 2nd. It will only get worst the longer you drive on it. I hated the feeling that I had to get a new tranny or a rebuilt one.
After you stop the truck and restart it, the blinking comes on if you drive over 30 mph for 3-5 minutes. If you stay at 25 it won't come on unless you drive for 15-20 minutes.
