I am new to your site. And would like to pick some brains. I am looking at a 64 f100 short bed step side that looks very good. No rust very good paint job. looks new everywhere I look. All stock except the engine and transmission. Someone put in a 302 and auto trans. I really love the looks of this truck and everything about it except the engine and trany. The only problem with it is the wood in the bed needs to be replaced to make it look nice. It runs out very nice and I can get it for 3500.00. is that too much. Also I would want to put power steering and power brakes on it for safety and us it as a daily driver. Any words of wisdom is welcome. Thanks.
1st & foremost welcome aboard. 64 F100 was the last year for straight axle front ends; its not the best choice for adding the items you mention like PS & Disc. However its doable.
Originailly your engine choice where bascially 223 cid six cylinder, 292 cid V-8, some had other type y blocks but most the to motors I mention.
I recommend looking very hard at the under carriage around where the radiator bolts to frame, cab mounts & floor pans. These where the common areas of rust due to P/O neglect.
I'm currently building a 64 swb Styleside. I putting a 360 motor with power assit brakes and power steering; so its doable.
Also look real close to the way the 302 is mounted; you could get lucky and the previous owners modified it right with a different front clip; to accomendate disc brakes.
I presonnelly see no major difference in disc or drums for a vehicle just for criusing and stuff.
Wooded floor is a easier fix then having to repair metal sections etc in the beds as well.
Everyone has there opinion's and these are mind.
Last but not lease; for $3500 it better be a sharp solid truck for me to buy.
But it also depends on your area of the world as well.
Welcome to FTE! for the Disc brakes look for the kit Speedway Motors offers...

depending on where you live 3500 might be a good deal for a running and driving truck, if you live in the southwest like me a good price would be 1500-2500 dollars there are a lot of these trucks to choose from.
Thanks for you replay. I live in Oregon and the truck is in Calif with Black Lic Plates. The new owner had a radiator shop put in a bigger radiator as the stock was not big enough. So no big deal on power brakes? The way I look at it is for the money I will have a truck that reminds me of you youth and will not go down in value like a newer truck. Thanks again for the replay.
I have not paid for it yet. If you know of a really nice 62-63-64-65-or 66 I am in the market. Must be a short bed side step. As stock as possible but in good running condition. I don't mind doing a little body work and a new paint job but no major re-build. Don't have the time or talent for that. Let me know if you know of anything. Thanks and I am glad I found you guys.
Hey; check your local chapter area on the FTE site; post what your looking for! Scroll down to find Oregon chapter. Also its not as good as it use to be; but we have a classified section as well on the FTE site.
Fords with Chevy beds are getting exceedingly harder to find. A straight axle truck will cost more in the long run to upgrade verses a 65 66 as anything to 79 will bolt in. Power steering on a straight axle is also a issue with no bolt in options.
