I am certainly new here and wanted some help making a decision. I have been searching for a second vehicle for quite some time now, i currently work for a local sheriff's department and have a take home car. I have come across a 2000 Excursion Limited with the 6.8L V10 with 181,000 miles for a really good price. it looks in pretty good shape, besides some normal dings and dents (especially being a black color), wheels are pitting pretty badly.
I did notice it was purchase from a dealers auction, so naturally i have some concerns.
1) Reliability
2) mileage being that high, what am i going to expect to replace/rebuild?
I have an 02 V10 and as long as the maint was performed regularly then mechanically it may be fine pending what the reports say. Mainly the homework on this will the answer.

Being a 2000, A concern would be spark plug blowout. With 181k on it, I would assume a tune up has been done, just wouldn't hurt to get in there and do another one, or at least check all cop's and plugs for torque(easier said than done on a 6.8 I know) but nothing a saturday in the driveway and a 6 pack can't take care of.

Plugs only took me about 3 hours. Probably could do them faster the next time.

Agree. Do the homework first. Just because it's an auction vehicle doesn't make it bad.
As long as it checks out ok, and is just a 2nd vehicle, you should be ok.
I retired from a Sheriff's Office and always had a take home car. Always kept a decent running 2nd though for the wife kids, and "just in case" times
