How would one know when to perform scheduled maintenance without and odometer? Are you going to maintain your engine based on the number of hours it runs?

No, I plan on doing more maintenance than is necessary, so it really won't be a problem. I might also just sneak an odometer under the dash where it isn't visible.

Oh and my 2003 FX4 w/60,000 miles is for sale in MN for $12,500.

well, in NJ you cant pass inspection with a broken speedo. AFAIK you need one. dont need a tach though.

Engine hours is a much better way to schedule maintenance then miles driven. A tachometer hour-meter gives a much better indication of how many "miles" on an engine than the odometer.

Using a GPS for distance travelled can be severely inaccurate depending on satellite coverage, terrain and curvature. As was mentioned, refresh rate factors in.

Can't the mileage on a vehicle be read using a code reader?
