Save this tranny

I gave my son my '99 Explorer (4.0SOHC) with 145,000 miles on her & still has the original transmission. He's recently bought a camper to tow, & I'm concerned about the tranny's future. I told him I didn't think it was a good idea, especially as he's up in the Adirondacks, but he's apparently much smarter than me.

I told him he should invest in a transmission cooler & oil cooler, & continue the regular fluid changes I always did, but I'd like to ask the group if there's anything else that will make this unit more bulletproof.

Are there any mods that will help? I'm not sure how heavy the camper is, but I know it's not a pop up type, so I'm sure the truck will be at it's limit.

Thanks for the help!

Rick

I think he said it weighed 3500 lbs. It's a dual axel, if that helps. I'm not sure how much it weighs, but I'm going up there this week. I figured we could place a scale under the trailer to check the tongue weight at least.

Any suggestions on tranny work or upgrades?

Thanks,
Rick

If it's a dual axle trailer it probably weighs more than 3500 lbs.

My very serious advice is to tow it with a different vehicle. An explorer is just not suited to tow that much weight. It would probably be illegal and it will definitely be unsafe.

Mods to help him out:

1. AAA card
2. Lawyer for when he loses control, overheats the brakes or any other mechanical failure because he way overloaded the vehicle and hits someone
3. A full size truck to tow it with when he realizes the Explorer is under powered to tow the trailer.

Hopefully he needs number 3 first.

Seriously, persuade him as much as possible to give up on towing that thing with the Explorer.

You also might want to get the thing out of your name as quickly as possible.
