I got a set of half tread BFG Mud Terrain 33x12x15 tires for free from someone who was just giving them away so I figured I would see if I could stuff them under the 85 F150 for summer use. It is a two wheel drive truck. My question is what backspacing is best for these tires. I have a couple of different sets of rims some aftermarket some stock that I have accumulated over the years and I was wondering if more backspacing would help them fit better or less. Also, whats the best way to measure the backspacing on the rims. They are currently all tireless (for a lack of a better word). I am going to put some air coil inserts in the front to lift her up a bit cause those are cheap. But I figure I should use these tires since they are in really good shape and I got them for free. I'd appreciate any input you guys have. Thanks.
You will need less backspacing. They are not going to fit very well on a stock rim, and if you could fit them, on the stock rim they will rub terribly on the radius arm when doing sharp parking lot manuevers. 31x10.5 tires will also rub the radius arms in a parking lot situation.
If you run a aftermarket rim with less backspacing, or is wider with all the extra width to the outside, that will set the tire more away from the frame, and it will start clearing the radius arms, but you will probably need to air up a little bit to clear the body.
Put a straight edge across the back of the rim, and then measure from it down to where the lug nut hole area is. That's the backspacing.
