Hello All, I just bought a 72 F-250 (360 engine) Camper Special. It runs and looks like it hasn't been taken super good care off. My experience level with mechanics is ok. I have rebuilt an engine with a friend so I'm not totally a newbie. I'm a student and have a small budget and want to slowly restore this truck while still driving it. I want to start with the engine, and want to try to squeeze as much fuel economy out of it as possible. Next payday I plan to do the basic tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points and condenser, thermostat, filters, oil. Was thinking about rebuilding the carb, flushing, the oil, radiator, etc.
My question is Parts. Whats good whats not. Again, I'm looking for better economy and I'm not affraid to spend a little for something that is actuall quality. For instance, is there a difference in $1.50 plugs compared to $6.00 plugs? I know there must be but there is so much out there I don't know what to get. I know it's a lengthy list I have there but can anybody give me some suggestions? Also is online shopping cheaper? or should I just go to NAPA, Shucks, etc..?
I would buy from one of your local parts stores first. NAPA seemed to have better quality parts compared to the other parts stores in my area.
Support your local economy first.
I've used those high dollar plugs and they didn't work any better than a Champion, Autolite, Motorcraft. Save your money for something else on your list.
joebroke,I would suggest installing a Petronix Ignitor in place of the points as a money saver.I was putting a set of points in my 390 at least twice a year as well as plugs plus I got tired of having to set the dwell every so often just to keep it running at full potential. So I installed an ignitor in all three of my trucks and now I replace the plugs about once every year and the cap and wires when needed.I get faster start up,a smoother running engine, and a little more power so to me it was worth it in the long run.Headers will also help a little with fuel economy though not as much as you would expect.A carb tune up might help with the fuel economy as well, hope this helps. Tomcat45 makes a good point of shopping close to home and is easier to return a bad part if that problem should happen. But sometimes online shopping can't be avoided.
