hi im new here. ive been contemplating putting or making a throttle body spacer for my 4.9 efi motor. (i have the ability to machine my own parts) my question is is it worth it? i know what it does and how it helps but seeing how i have a stupid plenum intake and direct port injection, it may not do as its supposed to. the big plenum box may stop the air from swirling down the intake tubes. and the air and fuel mix in the combustion chamber. so have i answered my own question or is there something i am missing?
I tried one on my 95 F-150 5.0. Wound up giving it away when I changed to an Edelbrock intake. It SEEMED to give a SLIGHT bump in fuel economy in conjunction with a K&N intake kit and upgraded ignition parts.
i have a stock ignition system. i made my own cold air intake, and took out the "unnecissary" equipment. i also have a a custom 2.5 inch catback side exit exaust. i wanna take out the cat and resonator and replace it with a single dual inlet cat from magnaflow. will i see any additional performance with this. i know it will get louder which is what i want anyway. the super 40 is loud but not loud enough. what ignition components did you install on your truck? with out the ignition will i see any benefit? btw this is on a 4.9 I6 efi
Any time you open up your exaust you will see HP gains and to a point you can get increases in fuel economy. I used accel ignition parts...replaced everything but the distributor. I really don't know if leaving the ignition stock will help or hurt you since I installed my K&N kit, throttle body spacer and ignition components at the same time. My truck had a stainless cat-and-resonator free dual inlet/outlet flowmaster exhaust when I bought it. I recently put an Edeldbrock 5.0 Truck performer intake, E303 cam, Ford Racing stainless headers and a Mustang 5.0 undredrive pulley set on my 1995 5.0 F-150. This led to QUITE the reduction in fuel economy. But on the other hand, it can be heard from the third floor of my home.
Don't waste your time with TB spacers, chips, CAI, KN, Tornado etc.
Why do you think your EFI setup is stupid?
By the way the KN FIPK setup sucks. I had it and lost fuel economy and power. It also does not seal up at the throttle body. My friends was the same way.
The stock I6 air tube is actually the best setup. It pulls in cool air from behind the grille. I would keep that stock setup.

Good on you for using you head.. the injectors are 16" downstream of the throttlebody at opposite ends of the intake runners so what exactly is adding 1/2" spacer behind the throttlebody going to accomplish? The answer is nothing.. besides screwing up the idle bypass circuit.
texasguy001: i made my own cold air intake. the couplers i have seal very well. i noticed better acceleration in the 3-4000 rpm range which with my granny gears and 4.10 rear put me at on the highway. i have 2 spectre cone filters that seem to work well where i have them. i get more air definitly, though i doubt the temp difference is any different from stock. im gonna put functional scoops on the hood and attach the filters directly to the TB. i have removed all the emissions equipment (egr valve, smog pump, and soon one of the cats) i want more power. i know its a I6 but the truck used to belong to a friend whos now deceased so it has sentimental value, and i wanna be different. the 4.9 has alot of torque and for 233000 miles i can still smoke 31x10.50 tires. what are some inexpensive ways i might be overlooking to make some more power. thanks for the help regarding a TB spacer guys.
and to answer your question about the efi. the direct port injection is great. i think the the giant plenum box directly above the motor is stupid. heat rises and heats the plenum making the air in it hotter. i know warm air combusts better but cold air is denser and makes more power. im sure there is a reason why ford thought the plenum was a great idea but i disagree.
