My dad has had this truck for quite some time, for the last ten years it's been down at my Grandfather's house. I have a '65 and have always toyed with the idea of going and getting it to swap the disc brakes to mine...but today I was thinking that it's actually in great shape, and probably worth saving.
I searched the internet, and wikipedia didn't tell me much about the Explorer model. I guess it's just a trim package, but I was hoping somebody could tell me what was different about it.
It's a 1979 4X2 with a 302 auto. Brown with an orange stripe.
The Explorer option was a trim and option package. Over the years it changed a little bit but not much. It was also a seasonal option in that it wasn't available all through the model year.
It was usually ordered on the base "custom" model but I have seen it on a "ranger" model also.
It came with distinctive tape stripes that changed from year to year and had exterior colors that were exclusive to the Explorer model. The interior was also keyed to the exterior color and again was exclusive to the Explorer trim.
There were different Explorer packages. These too changed a little over the years. Package A included the Explorer badging, colors and tape stripes. On the shortbed it included tie downs and the longbed included box rails. 2WD models included full "mag style" wheel covers and other trim and accessories. Package B included all of A plus power steering and automatic transmission. Package C added air conditioning and tinted glass. Some years had a Package D which included the factory topper shell.
