First I'd like to say hello to all here. I've posted on the excursion forum in the past but this is my first on here.
Now my problem: I have an engine I purchased that I'm installing in a 32 roadster. It's a 91 302 from a t-bird (#code) that has been built with edel. perf.rpm heads & edel. 2x4 carbs + intake, msd ign. & some aftermarket balancer & pully & high perf. ford cam the previous owner could not ID. Being carbed the previous owner changed the timing cover to allow the use of a mech. fuel pump. I picked up a ford timing pointer at the junk yard that mounts on the passenger side with 2 bolts. I found the approx. tdc on compression stroke and set the dist. at that general location. The engine fired with a little turning of the dist. and will run but when I check the timing with a light it's about 5 deg. after tdc by the reading on the balancer that it runs the best but still misses randomly. Should I just remove my ford timing pointer and make my own after determining true tdc?
Thanks for any ideas, David
Yes that is what I would suggest, use a small piece of wire in the plug hole to determine exact TDC and then modify the pointer you have or create one of your own.
Remove the #1 plug and crank the motor over by hand with a breaker bar on the crank bolt, as that cylinder comes up to TDC if you put a finger over the plug hole you will feel air being pushed out. If you then put a piece of wire into the plug hole so it touches the top of the piston you will be able to feel when it is at TDC. To get it exact, position the breaker bar so the handle is up and move the crank CW from what you think is TDC to where the piston just begins to drop and make note of that position, and then do the same in the CCW direction and also make note of that position. Exact TDC is then halfway between these two marks.
