Found a running 292 on CL the other day but its out of a F800 Truck. Would this be a good motor to replace the 272 thats in my 58 F100 now? I believe it also had a 4 speed behind it. Thanks for any help!!
yea as long as its a 292 it should work fine. it might be a H.D. motor meaning it will have different compression and im not sure what all else (forged crank, rams horns?????)
be careful its not a 302 or 332 lincoln y.if its a 292 it should be the h.d. engine.it will fit no problem.
Whoa whoa whao whao, what's wrong with the 302/332?
They aren't fords??!?!?!!??
I am interested in a transmission that I suspect only came hooked up to the 302-332 in 1956 and I'm curious to learn as much about those two motors as possible.

The warning is not to say they are bad engines, but to say make sure you're getting what you think you are. Buying a Lincoln Y and thinking you're getting a Ford Y would be like wanting a 351W and someone selling you a 460 instead. If you didn't know the difference, you'd be a bit dissapointed when you got home and things didn't fit like you thought they should.
Usually the 292 was not used in anything much larger than the F700. And that was the HD model, which had a 4 barrel and a governor with low compression. The 302 and 332 also had 4 barrels and governors. One tip, if the distributor has a connection for a tach drive cable it most likely a 302 or 332.
^^So your saying that let's say--a '56 F600--may have come with a 292 and NOT a 302/332?
The shop manual I have has a chart that describes which trans were stadard and which ones were optional on which trucks..,.
But the freakin manual doesn't go into detail about which ENGINES were available standard/optional on which models.....I'd really like to see something.
302 was usually F700 and up, 332 was usually F750 and up. F600 was 292 MD and 292HD for V8s 58 and later. 56 might have had a 272. Sales literature often listed standard and available engines.
