1976 Ford Highboy

My truck has a Dana44 in front with factory power assist. My question is I would like to install a Dana 60 and retain my power assist, is this feasible or am i wasting time and where would be the best place to look for an axle,or do i have to build one. Thanks Craig

your in the wrong forum for this question. this is for engine swap questions.

that power assist sucks. ive owened a couple of those fords and it was there worst design. if you swap over to a D60 i suggest you also swap over to a 78-79 F250/F350 power steering box and go with a hi steer setup.

Crew caba nd some forestry trucks used low pinion dana 60's and power assist. What I am getting at is that even if you upgrade to a high pinion dana 60 and wish to keep this style steering you can find a bracket that will work.
Other wise you are going to have to modify the existing bracket to fit around the larger axle tube. Some cutting and welding will be required but this has been done.

i too agree that this steering is problematic and not worth the time to install.
Integral power steering is a far better solution.

IMO I would spend the time and money for a better steering system. I did the 78 79 F250 4x4 steering upgrade with a Borgeson steering shaft on my highboy and I'm really glad I did.

There is other steering setups I'm sure by now for the highboy. Unless your really into heavy 4 wheeling or the price is inviting for the D60, I'd spend the money else where.

I too did the 78/79 steering box upgrade to my '74 highboy with the ram-style steering. BIG improvement.
