It's completely stock right now, so I've been trying to learn what mods will best suit my needs. A buddy of mine has owned his 2001 7.3 since new and it was really his experience that got me interested in these late model trucks (I've been a gas engine guy for a long time). He's got about 285,000 miles on his and I've seen him beat the hell out of it - drives it like he hates it and tows an excavator all over Northern California. Other than two transmissions (ouch!) he's had no signficant problems. He's got a 4" exhaust and a Super Chip programer and I really like how his truck performs.

Although my truck seems like a rocket already, I would like to beef it up a bit. So, I think I may go for the same mods my buddy put on his 2001. At the same time, I don't want a screaming exhaust note and I would really like to see if I can improve the mpg somewhat. All of this hopefully without killing my transmission as often as my friend has.

BTW, can someone tell me what a 6637 intake is? I see them in almost everybody's signature line.

Nice! Does it have any mods? Don't do any mods to it that are a waste of time & money...

Oh by the way stay AWAY from superchips, hypertech, edge, and any other generic tuner. You don't want these "canned" tunes. Search for ie. google power hungry performace, dp tuner, swamps diesel, these should get you started, and your truck should run circles around your buddies!! At the same time they are better for your transmission, meaning the people who write the software understand how your trans. works, and what your goals are driving the truck...

As stated above, I would suggest avoiding the 'off the shelf' tuners. DP Tuner, PHP, Tony WIldman, Swamps, and I'm sure there are others I'm missing, know these trucks and write specific tunes just for the 7.3. Your truck will run much better, shift better, and get better MPG's (if you can stay off the skinny pedal!!) I would also strongly suggest that first you do a CAI (like a 6637), an exhaust (with or without a muffler) and a set of gauges to keep an eye on everything. Clay at RiffRaff Diesel can get you set up with everything you need.

Thumbs up

I have the exact truck as you. I got mine with 89k in 2005. Since then the wheel wells have re-rusted again but other than that its great. I have a raptor Toy hauler that I pull. I did all the mods listed below my msg with the help of this forum. It makes pulling the trailer a dream. Well worth cost for the mods. I now have 160k on it and she is still running like a top. I have had no major issues that I couldnt fix with the help of this forum. My brother has a 2001 7.3 and just hit 600k on his. Its all stock too. So these motors just keep running and the rest of the truck will fall apart around it. But cant beat that investment. good luck jeff

Noticed the PO installed a K&N filter which I hear is not a good thing for these engines, so I'm ordering an AIS kit today and will go from there. I'm also looking to add gauges pretty early on.

Good deal, as for gauges, IMHO you can't go wrong with ISSPRO's. I love my Performax's.

AIS Kit

Just got my AIS kit from Powerstrokeshop.com and it's missing the intake box. I assume this is not really all that should be here?

Nice truck, yes you are missing some parts, the air box and the filter would be nice. check with the supplier probably just a simple mistake or shipped separately. IMHO you made a good choice on the AIS, best filter out their for really clean air supply. Good luck with your new toy.

Yeah, I was gonna be a little disapointed if a $200 air filter kit didn't even come with a filter element. Got a message into the supplier and figure it was just a mistake. I was all excited to put this thing on tonight. Guess I'll have to wait a few more days.

Yes, it's missing some important pieces. You'll love the filter setup though - once it's all there.

Nice truck too. Congrats.

Hopefully I can just keep posting about how much I love this truck for a while before I have to come back and ask you fine folks for help.
Just the fact that the seller let you take it for a couple days is a good sign that things should be in good shape. You don't hear of that very often, or at all.

Great looking truck!!

You'll definitely enjoy it!

Sweet Truck, I love a Lariat! My truck is just an XLT so I have had to upgrade to leather seats, color matched mirrosrs, etc...buts its still NO Lariat. Welcome to FTE and get ready to catch PMS. great start with the intake, that would've been my first mod too. hope the rest of the parts show up so we can see a pic of it installed. Congrats!
