I found a set for sale for $150, but need to be cleaned up. Is this a good price? These are the really rare heads correct? What casting number should I look for?
These are the first 351 heads Ford made in 1969. Casting numbers start with a C9OE.
They are fair heads now but were the best Ford windsor small block heads back then.
They have 1.84" intake valves and 1.54" exhaust valves which are both bigger than previous 289/302 valves or future factory small block heads. They don't have hardened
valve seats which are required with unleaded fuel. After you buy them for the price you
listed and have them reconditioned which would include; harden seats, valve guides,
new valves, valve job, valves springs, seals, ect., you could probably buy a new set
of cast iron heads from RHS or Dart for about the same money and have much better
performance. The main problem with windsor small block heads are the ports. The
exhaust port is very restrictive and is the same size on 289/302 and 351 heads.
I had d0oe's (from a 70 mustang I believe) I skipped the hardened valve seats and spent a lot of time removing the "emissions humps" in the exhaust ports. THey lasted only about 10k miles (hard miles) before the exhaust valves sank so far in the head that it ran like dog-doo. I got a set of gt40's now (I think I paid $300 shipped) and I just cleaned them up and bolted them on. I think it runs better now than it ever did with the d0oe's. you'd be money ahead if you just found some used gt40's IMO
D0OEs and C9OEs are the same. I've run both. The hardened seats are a must if using
these heads now. All of the production Ford windsor small block heads suffer from an
exhaust port problem in stock form and require experienced porting to give good results.
With the availability and reasonable price of aftermarket heads for windsors, for my
money that is the way to go if you want performance.
It all depends on the budget, if I had the cash I would have gone with some aluminum aftermarket heads or even cast iron. used gt40's are a good bang for the buck though.
Thanks for the info guys. I have just heard about how they flow so well, but after some research you can buy some aftermarket heads that flow even better for not much more to get those re-worked.
Well it will take a few hours to clean up the exhaust, but in my Opinion your better off with Vintage Ford Iron. You do drive a Ford? Why not use Ford heads. They are just as good as GT 40 Heads & with port & bowl work they will out flow them.
Throw some FRPP studs & rocker & you are good to go.
They can be ported to flow pretty good but it takes a lot of work and some knowing
what you are doing. It still doesn't change the need for hardened valve seats to be
installed so these heads will last on unleaded fuel. When you put the cost of all of this
together it makes sense to invest in a set of heads that flow as well as the C9OEs can
when ported but don't need all of the work to make them usable.
If you want to keep it all authentic Ford then pony up for some properly(CNC) ported heads from Thumper Performance or Powerheads, these will outperform C9/D0 and GT40 heads by quite a bit.

I have a set of those in the shop getting a new guide. they are very good & good price too. The guy I got them from was turning 11.70's in a notch. Took out a piston & rod & a valve. got em for 50 bucks he went Chevy. 75$ & they are good as new. They have the 1.84's in them.
Meaning he's putting a SBC in his Mustang and therefore deserves to be publically tarred and feathered for crimes against the Blue Oval, or he has simply defected to the dark side and is now racing a Gov't motors car?
I thought GT40 heads ARE made by Ford...originally from SVO, now called Ford Racing Parts. If you get the GT40x (aluminum), they will save about 40 pounds of weight from the front of your car, and will flow pretty well as-delivered for about the same cost as a set of hand-ported C9/D0 heads. I won't say how it will perform compared to custom ported heads since the machinist can do anything to them.
