hello i need to figure out this engine, its in a 53 f350 the vin says its a 215 but im not sure thats what it is. the plugs for a 215 should be autolite 216's but the head on this engine takes the larger threaded plugs without the little gasket like you would find on a later 223. the balancer only has one mark on it for top dead center and the 223 i think had small marks representing 3,6,9 btdc and atdc. is it possible that the head was changed on this engine to a later 223 head??? i got it to run for about 30 seconds a few weeks back when i was messin with it but now i can't get it to start again, it had a mix of motorcraft and champion plugs in it which is how i found out it didn't take the 216's i wanted to get them out and put some good plugs in, so i got some autolite 46's to put in it since the threads on the 216's were to small, is there a chart i could look up the numbers on the engine to see what it is
EDIT: i got it running good now... still unsure if its a 215 or a 223 but im still searching
Is it the original factory installed engine? If so it would be a 215. The 223 was first installed in 54, and interestingly enough, both engines were represented by the letter "D" on your serial number.
There is a chart in the front of the "1948-1956 Ford Truck Parts and Accessories Illustrations Catalog." You might find that at "Earls World" here on FTE.
