A/C Experts please come in, simple question.

My A/C compressor locked up. I am replacing wit a used one. Question is do I add oil to the compressor before I install it or do I add it via the A/C gauges? I do not know how much oil is in the used compressor and I do not want to do a dry start on it and damage it. Hope this make sence.

Thanks for the help!

I make sure there is oil in the compressor and turn it over several times before installing. Stand it on its end and try to drain out most of the old oil and add some new. I don't remeber if there is a plug on these. I haven't changed one in a while. If your old compressor locked up, then you need to check the system for contamination and do a thorough flush, adding oil to the system afterwards. I put some oil in each of the cores while the lines are off.

The oil is in the refrigerant can's you have to run the system to get it in. Get the big cans shake well get your hoses ready find the inlet, start truck put on max and put it in.

The sticker under the hood will tell you how much and what kind of oil to use,it will also tell you how much R-134 to put in,problem is,you don't know how much oil to put in since it's a used compressor.Try to get all you can out like Roland said, you definately need to replace the dryer, orifice tube/expansion valve,it's best to shoot alcohol through the system to clean it out, you'll probably have debris from the old compressor in the system. You will also have to run a vacuum on the system to remove any moisture.

Man, on a system that's been trashed, I would second giving priority to running a deep vacuum to get rid of contaminants.

If your old compressor locked up its possible that it may have come apart inside, Your best bet if you are trying to stay on the cheap side of repair is replace the orifice tube also. that way if there are any contaminants in the old one you wont have to dump your freon to replace a plugged one later. If you can afford it I would replace the filter dryer (accumulator) also. This will probably cost close to 50 or 60 bucks but it could save a lot of headaches later, And also if you know someone with a vacuum pump have it pumped into a vacuum to eliminate any moisture that may have gotten into your system while it was open from working on it.As far as oil, I think most hot shot cans have oil in them. but I usually put some oil in the compressor any way just to be on the safe side.
