Last friday my calls me at work and tell me the EX won't start and said
the starter sounded funny and the motor wouldn't roll over.Left work
to check it out and found two of the starter bolts gone and the third
one loose. The starter kicked a little bit sideways and broke the top ear
off that the bolt goes through.I bought it new in 2003 got 120,000 on
it. Don't know how the bolts came out the stater has never been off.
Anyone ever hear of this.
All you 6.0ers out there migth check your stater bolts . $205 for a
stater and who knows if it gets the flywheel.
Sorry I can't help you wiht 6.0, but I used to have a 78 1-ton Chevy with a really high compression 454 Big Block. This happened one time. My guess was the over time the bolts got a little loose and due to the high torque on the starter they just worked themselves out. I made it a point to check it periodically and it never happened again. The flywheel was not damaged through this whole thing.
We had loose starter bolts on our 7.3 that was found during a transmission inspection. Hadn't caused any damage but could have been bad if they came out. Definitely something for everyone to check now and again.
