73 F100 360 c6. I have this rig running excellent. BUT. Yesterday I took it out on the highway for a longer test. 1/2 hour into it it's like I ran out of gas with a full tank. Missing and sputtering until dead. Pull over pull fuel filter and it seems to be clean, fuel present put it back together and start home half way there same thing. I stop for a bit and pull the fuel line same deal put it back together and it runs perfect. Today I start it up runs perfect take it for a drive no problem. Start out on the highway 30 miles later starts to sputter and shuts down. Pull the fuel line and it seems like there isn't enough fuel there and the filter seems clean. I put a bottle over the fuel line and turn it over and it pumps fuel into the bottle. I put it back together and it runs perfect all the way home. I run it at WOT a few times and no problem. Driving me nuts. I have never had a fuel pump quit then go. If I had an air leak in the line it would be there all the time.
The rig was a sitter until I got it and I have put alot of miles on it in the last month. perhaps some debris. But then it just takes off fine.
I have a Pertronix 3 and it has been perfect but I do have a high static time of 20* with no ping. I did move the vac advance to mani but I don't have any problems at low load. 20* static, 15* full vac ad, 23* mech somewhere around 3K. No flooding it all seems to lean out.
Any ideas. Tomorrow I am putting a can filter close to the tank.
I'd bet on there being gunk in the gas tank. Prolly need to pull it, & rinse it. Wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't filter the current gas and use it up. That happened to me with my current truck as I was putting it on the road.

What do you think about filters before the pump permanently? I did start useing fuel additive (basic fuel system cleaner) and it prolly is delaminating the scuz off the inside of the tank.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> <o></o>
I am of the opinion that a good fuel filter/water seperator is never a bad thing. I have been using the marine spin on filters for year. Two advantages, first they filter really well while trapping water. Second if the filter can fills up with junk and/or water while you are out and about, just unscrew the filter and dump the crap out, reinstall and it will get you home. Or carry a spare like I do. If you notice all the EFI engines run filters that are easy to replace.
Here is Mercury Marines version, but Sierra makes them too.

I have never been to Wa state, so I don't know how the inside of gas tanks do after years of use. Bear is from your state and posted that there may be a reason for adding filters.
I cleaned my tank about 12 years back and have not had an issue since. That was the first tank issue that I had ever run across, and I have been around these ol Fords all my life.

Yeah thats another thing I had just filled up at a differant station. I wonder if..... @3bones a gallon, "a bit o the water" made it in the tanks??? I like the thought of this filter thanks.
next time it happens check you gas cap if you hear it suck when you open it ..your vent is not working..had that problem on my truck ..replaced the cap an it was fine after that..the simpelest problems are the hardest to find...73 didn't have a closed system did it?
