When I dropped the filter down it sounded like something heavy hit the drain pan. I found a spring and am pretty sure I know where it goes... there's a hole and a matching tab on the filter to cover it. Wondering if something else fell out and went in the drain pan or if the tension on the spring just made it sound heavier. Anyone know if there's anything else that's supposed to go in there?
AutoZone had the "top off" info... it was 4 quarts.
I went ahead and got Mercon V... it was only a little more and -says- it's better than III.
I'm having a nice little conversation here with myself. Just for future reference... mine was supposed to have Type F fluid. Noticed it on the dipstick when I was refilling... doh!
And, it only took a tad over three quarts to top it off.

Uhhh, yep there was something else that went in the hole with the spring. After coming up empty with web searches and not getting any replies I put it back together with just the spring. It shifts into drive at about 10mph and will not downshift.
Drained the catch pan and found the missing part... it kinda looks like a bolt with no threads on it.
I'm going to do a short tech article on this... knowing that spring and part were gonna drop out woulda saved me a good bit of work.
Definately some good info. I'm with pward on this one though. Basically I got no clue on how to help you but this is some good info as I also have a C4. So do you just drop the pan and change the filter? Is there a drain plug in the pan? Do I need a new gasket also? Did you get all your parts from AutoZone? How much did it cost? I need to do this to mine too but was holding out for fear I may get into something far more than I can do. Thanks.

That's pretty much it... drop the pan and change the filter. On mine (I'm assuming it's the same for all C4s of the era) the dipstick tube went in the side of the pan making a handy way to drain the pan easily.
All of the filters I've bought (including this one) came with a gasket so no need to worry with that... and it was only about $6 for the kit at AutoZone. Also, as mentioned before, go ahead and pick up four quarts of Type F fluid to top it off after the change.
Really the only tidbit you need if you already do a little wrenching is to watch out for that spring mechanism when dropping the filter. I wouldn't have gotten burned except I was using a hollow catch pan with two small holes in the top and wouldn't you know it... the little "valve" (threadless bolt as I described it earlier) went in one of the holes so I couldn't see it.
When the trans didn't operate properly I suspected something was missing so I emptied the pan and was able to shake it out.
Still need to know if the "valve" goes on the top end of the spring or the bottom end.
