I was trying to take my steerin shaft out in order to take some play out of it and i got this bolt out, well half way out. I cant get it to go back in or out the whole way. Is there a trick to this thing?
Is the bolt bent? Does it have a hex head on it or is it just round? try unscrewing it out that hole also. I believe there is an indention in the shaft that bolt sits in so it has to come completely out to get the shaft off. Maybe try to clean some of the gunk off so you can see whats going on easier.
The fitting might be spring loaded so to speak. The bolt tightens, and in doing so compresses the split fitting. When unscrew the bolt, it allows the split fitting to spread back out throwing the fitting out of alignment and putting tension on the bolt, especially with the gunk on cleaning the gunk up. try up. If that doesn't work, try a vise grip to compress the fitting back into place and see if you can remove the bolt.
Lasthighboy hit it right. There is a indention on the shaft for the bolt to slde into. Same thing on my Jeep with the GM power box. They do make rebuild kits and the rubber boot for them to.
I would not cut that bolt. I think that might actually make it harder to remove the shaft, and good luck finding an exact replacement. Looks like its got a funky head on it.
