What kind of headaches will i experience swapping a 97 4.6 triton into a 97 f150 that had a blown 5.6 triton. About the only difference that,s visible is the intake manifold, ok this might sound ignorent but I,m a GM man and I Am swapping this engine for a friend. what are the little black cylinder looking contraptions by the fuel injecters on the 5.4 and the 4.6 does not have them. have not been able to locate them in the haynes manual maybe because I lack the proper name of them.
The Black cylinder lookin things are COP's (coil on plugs), the 5.4 has one coil per cylinder, your 4.6 has coil packs. Does your doner engine come with the wireing harness or computer... or better yet do you have a whole donor truck? cause im pretty sure your gonna need that and a bunch of other little things as well
Feel like a dummy on the C.O.P. thing I should have noticed that the 5.4 didn`t have the coil packs on the front of the heads. And yes I do have the donor truck and recipient side by side. Another red flag just went up in my mind even if i change the harness and the computer am I opening up another can of worms if not compatable with body module and theft deterant reader. I had a bad experiance with a 2000 GMC in those areas.
The exhaust manifold collectors are at slightly different angles and positions between the two motors. The little black things are the ignition coils. You might be able to use the wiring/ coil on plug setup from the 5.4 on the 4.6 and recalibrate your computer. I'm pretty sure that it would work well but I'm not 100% sure.
Also, the 97 trucks didn't have PATS, so you shouldn't have any theft deterrent problems. The computers and connectors are physically the same but there may be slight differences in pin function because of the ignition and transmission differences.
The engine computer also controls the transmission and the truck with the 5.4 could have an E40D or a 4R70W. The truck with the 4.6 definitely has the 4R70W. You need to make sure the computer that you use is programmed for the right transmission.
On the door panel sticker, code E is the E40D and I think code U is the 4R70W
