Transfer case - quick question about the mount - pls help
Can anyone tell me about the transfer case MOUNT? Is that a weld on or bolt on part? Is it a part of the case itself and the whole thing has to be replaced or a standalone part I can get from the auto parts store or junkyard? it's a 90 F150, 4X4, 5sp with a 5.0.
I can't tell from the service manual and the truck is not here for me to look. I'm hoping this is a fairly straightforward repair I can do on my own.
There is no transfer case mount on these trucks. The tranny mount sites under the transmission right before where the transfer case bolts on. It takes 2 bolts to the cross member and 2 bolts to the transmission itself, it an easy job. Unless of course the aluminum transmission case is broken where the mount bolts too. Then you have bigger problems.
You can get replacement mounts at any auto parts store.
Thanks for getting back to me. I've since gotten the truck back and crawled up under it looking for the "broken" transfer case mounts that the technician at the local repair shop said were the cause of my problem. I can't find such an animal and none of the parts suppliers had anything that fit that description either.
The issue is a noise "clank/clunk/groan type noise that can be heard when you get on the gas. The thought is that the torque from getting on the gas is causing the noise. the noise is not present when idling or crusing at speed.
Hoping to save on a big repair bill if it is something as simple as changing a mount. If it's something bigger I don't want to be paying the shop $$ to change something that isn't the problem.
Any pics of the mounts would be helpful as I have not seen a diagram in any of the catalogs/shop manual that is helpful.
I'v never had a trans mount go bad, so i dont know what it sounds/feels like. I think a bad trans mount is pretty rare. Normally youd feel it more when you hit big bumps and on rough roads. You can crawl under there and push, up, down, side to side and see how much the trans and t-case moves. Does it do it when you let off the gas? Can you feel the trans move around alot with the shifter? Is there any vibration when going down the road? Is it a consistence sound? Like every time you hit the gas, or only sometimes? Does it just happen when you first get on the gas?
Let us know what you find and we should be able to help you diagnose it.
I've been up under the truck and can't get anything to move. There is definitely a clunk but I'm relying on the opinion of the tech as to the cause. I cant seem to see what he sees but the noise is unmistakeable. It mainly occurs when you are on the accelerator so that is the most consistent thing about it. Don't know that I feel any unusual vibration and I can't say I've felt it when letting off the gas either. Thanks for your help with the diagnosis. I'm open to suggestions.
Ya, i was gonna say, I would suggest looking at the motor mounts on the engine. The 300 is notorious for breaking the motor mounts. when you get on the gas real hard in the lower gears(1st and 2nd) does it pull the shifter **** way over to the right? that's what mine did when i broke my motor mount. The fan also hit the shroud and tore it up. Replace both of them at the same time otherwise you'll be doing it again shortly.
