Problem #1: (First problem)Tail lights would not turn on. Signals and brake lights would turn on, tail lights would not turn on.
Answer #1: Redo connections under the body.
Problem #2: (Once Answer #1 was performed, this problem arose) Signal lights, when turned on while lights were on, blew the fuse.
Answer #2: Put in a bigger fuse.
Problem #3: (Once Answer #2 was performed, this problem arose) Signal lights, when turned on while lights were on, didn't work. Fuse didn't blow. Once lights turned off, signal started to work.
Answer A: You have a dead short between the Brown Marker lamp wire and either the front Left Light Green/White Stripe turn signal wire in the front, or the Left Light Green/Orange stripe turn and brake lamp in the back. This is either due to a bad lamps socket, bad ground, shorted wire, or faulty bulb. My guess is it's in the back either in the frame rail harness, or rear harness. It could also be in the main harness, see answer "B" later on...
Replace the fuse with the proper amperage. If the fuse blows again, unplug the rear harness from the frame rail harness, and test the wires there at the connector. Test for power at the wires with the light switch on, and turn signal off, then with the light switch off and turn signal on. Power should only be on the respected wires accordingly.
1) Brown: Marker lamps. Power with light switch on only.
2) Light Green/Orange stripe: Left Turn Signal and brake. Power if brake or turn signal switch on to left side only.
3) Orange/Light Blue stripe: Right turn Signal and brake. Power if brake or turn signal switch on to right side only.
If the problem goes away, then the rear harness is suspect.
If power is on the brown and either of the two turn signal wires simultaniously. IE: Brown wire and Light Green/Orange stripe wire, then you have a short in the wiring somewhere either in the frame rail harness, or the main harness. Unplug the frame harness from the main harness and try the test again at the main harness connector. If the problem goes away, then the problem is in the frame rail harness.
Answer #3: Shook around the light switch (not turn signal switch) (I think that fixed it, I mean, it's not doing it anymore...and I didn't do anything other than that...)
Answer B: There is a known problem of the headlamp switch and wires getting too hot in this area. The harness and headlamp connector will melt around this area and make all sorts of problems. If you are smelling burnt wires or electrics, then this is a good place to look. You will need to unwrap the black tape from the wires and inspect the wires for melting, or burns. You may have to unwrap the harness quite aways to see anything peculiar. Replace the connector if broken cracked or signs of melting, replace the headlamp switch, and fix any melted or burned looking wires you may find.
Problem #4: (Once Answer #3 was performed, this problem arose) Brake lights worked, turn signals worked. When lights were turned on, driver side rear tail light would brighten as if brakes were on. Once lights were turned on, driver side rear signal would not work.
Look at answer "A" above and Answer "C" below.
Answer #4: Flip bulb around. (Don't ask me how this fixed it, but it did)
Answer C: Replace that lamp socket with a new one. The bulb should not be able to be placed in the socket backwards like that. It shows worn out or broken lamp socket as the socket and bulb are supposed to be idiot proof. Also the ground can break in the socket. Since the marker and turn signal lamps use the same comon ground, if ground is lost at the socket, then one circut will use the other circut as a ground path until both circuts is active then problems arise. Check the grounds at both the front and rear of the truck for the lights as well. If the ground is bad it will also cause a simular problem as the bad lamp socket.
Problem #5: (Once Answer #4 was performed, this problem arose) Front signals worked, lights worked. When lights were turned on, driver side signal light would be continuously bright as if the signal was jammed on bright. When lights are off, it works fine, when lights are on, signal light would be continuously bright.
Look at Answer A and Answer C.
Finding #1: After giggling the switch, when turned on, my interior light worked. It had not worked before, but after giggling the switch, it turns on.
Finding #2: When lights are turned on, smell of burning electronics.
My guess: Light switch needs to be replaced.
Look at answer B for both findings 1 and 2.
Your guess:You tell me.
Please help! I have until Thursday to get my truck inspected so I can drive it. The only problem that I have left is Problem #5. Please help!
With the following answers you should be able to fix these problems. It may take you longer than Thursday though if the problem is in the main harness.
The 85 has the switch in the same place as the bronco. If there is no switch the switch has been broken off, or a non standard part has been used. Replace the turn signal switch with a new or proper one.
I have just solved a similar problem. I had no taillights, no brake lights, and when I put the blinker on (either side), both blinkers on the back would go on. Four ways were fine.
My truck is an 86 Stepside, with the separate taillight assemblies.
I finally traced it down to a bad ground. I ended up running a separate wire from a cleaned up hole in the frame to the back of the light assembly. Everything works fine now, but I wanted to post on here for anyone who may have a similar problem.
