Manual Tranny Preference
So I'm pretty sure that if I can find all the parts I need somewhat soon that I'm gonna go ahead with the swap. So my question is...What have yall seen to be the best 5 speed to put in the 7.3? I've read a little about the two different ZF5's and the M5OD but nothing compares to real world experience so let me know what yall think.

you got the zf5 42 and 47.
i'd get the newer one if you can. but they are pretty much the same.
few design upgrades on the 47.
can't put an m5od in there. thats a 1/2 ton trans.
our trucks would destroy them.

The ZF5-47 like William said is the best option. It is put in the '96 - '97 F-250,350's withe the PSD 7.3L diesel only.

So what year model ZF's will bolt up? Obviously the 96 and 97 with a ZF5-47 but whatabout the 42's? Is there any internal mods to make so a 42 will work?

Any ZF5 from a 7.3 will work.
I'll be swapping in the ZF5 from my '88 F350 (first year of 7.3 IDI). Then you'll need the clutch and flywheel for the 1996 in your case.
You can even swap in a ZF6 from a superduty 7.3, but you won't really gain much except a granny low gear. Final drive gear is about the same.

Is the cooler for a zf6 that much different from a zf5?

So the big question is... Where can I look to find a decent ZF5-47? I'd rather not rebuild one either but I guess isn't totally out of the picture. I've looked on FTE and PSN classifieds but no luck so far. I need me a tranny sooner rather than later and really want to swap instead of rebuild the auto.

Check wrecking yards and craigslist... I have seen a couple on craigslist locally being parted out.

I think your best bet would be craiglist. I've seen a couple donor trucks on there before. Asking prices seem to be fair in my book.

The oil cooler on the zf5 is so different from the zf6, that the zf5 doesn't have one. :P

Touche Talyn, Touche. That would make plenty of sense.
So what is an average "fair" price for a decent running ZF5?

Call around to some junk yards. you will need some other parts too to swap if you could get it all off of one truck you would probly come out better.

I just found one on craiglist for $325... even includes the transfer case (that has damage). Out of a 94.
I think $300 is a fair price. If it were me I'd ****** one up for cheap and then have it redone.
