I'd really love to lock the built-in toolbox on the passenger side of my F100, but the key that came with it doesn't work....I'm not sure that this is the actual key, since "Back Door" is stamped on the key ....
I gave the lock a shot of WD-40 but that didn't help anything. Any ideas on solutions? Can locksmiths rekey this from the existing lock?
Also, there is a small (aftermarket?) lock just behind the driver's side door, just above the gas cap. It's an old-style lock, almost like you would see on a bus station locker. The guy thought it went to an old alarm, which maybe it does. I gave that a shot of WD-40 too, but the little key wouldn't work. Do you guys know if this was the preferred spot for alarms? When did car alarms first appear on the scene anyways?

WD-40 isn't the best stuff to use for lock cylinders. Graphite is the prefered substance, WD-40 attracts dust.
A lock shop can pick the lock, then make you a new key.
C4TZ9946112A .. Tool Storage Compartment Door Lock w/Keys / Obsolete
Fits: 1964/66 F100/250 Styleside Pickups.
JST AUTOMOTIVE in Lebanon TN has ONE = 615-443-3086.
NOS PARTS SOURCE in Lenexa KS has ONE = 913-330-5746.
No Ford Dealer, no other obsolete parts vendor has any.
------------------------------------------------------
No Ford truck came with any sort of factory installed alarm until power door locks were introduced that could be operated by the key fob.
My 1992 F150 Lariat S/Cab had P/D locks, but the key fob operated setup wasn't offered until 1997 or so.
Thanks, Bill. Since I like the idea of keeping my stock toolbox, maybe I'll see if a locksmith can pick it and make a new key. Also--I had no idea about graphite spray. Do they sell that at most automotive stores? Or other? Thanks again!
The lock can be removed from the latch, but in looking at my NOS one vs the pic in the parts book it differs by one big part...mine has a protective rubber cover on the backside of the handle that seals the lock stuff from the elements.
If your latch has slop between the handle and the opening mechanism as evidenced by a rattling/loose handle, that cotter key and pin its on is what holds the handle onto the latch itself.
If you dont wanna attempt removing the handle then I would take it off and go to a locksmith...a word of caution...CLEAN THE THREADS ON THE STUDS THAT RETAIN THE ASSEMBLY TO THE DOOR AS THOSE ARE CAST INTO THE LATCH BASE!!!!
I tried removing one from the latch on my truck box now and it snapped off...and given how much load is exerted on them when opening the door...it tweaks things after a while and you get the random falling open door...like I got now.
There SHOULD be some kind of key code on the lock cylinder...no guarantee...but there is on the door locks and ignition lock cylinder.
If you do break it(the assembly, etc.) I have spares up here...
