I already have a 351C, but I've read that Ford produced either a 351M or 400 in the mid '70s that had a small block bellhousing and motor mount patterns (ala 351C). I think I heard that they may be Ranchero specific? Is this true, and what would it take to make the 351M a 400? Would I use my 351C pistons and bush the rods for that, or is it a whole different deal? For some reason I've been having trouble getting search functions to work with me.
Yes, Ford did produce a 400 with a 351C bell housing. the casting number is D3AE-B. It is identical to other 400 blocks in all other areas. If you wanted to make it a 351M, you would need a 351M crank and pistons. You're 351C pistons would not work with a 351M crank. The rods are the same for both the 351M and the 400. These engines were installed in full size Fords in 1973 with an FMX transmission.
Ford made the 400 with a C (or W) bellhousing bolt pattern for 1 model year in 1973. I don't think it's vehicle specific although it had to have gone in a car as opposed to a truck since the 335 series didn't appear in trucks until 1977. According to all of the info I've seen all the rest of the parts are interchangeable with the large pattern 400.
I don't want a 351M, I was just kicking around the idea of ending up with about 400 CID. Now didn't I read that you could use 351C pistons in the 400, if you bush the rods? Or was that the 351M? I have the .030 Cleveland pistons.
