Hey y'all, my 300 I6 is havin problems keeping cool. According to the temp guage, Normal operating temp is usually at the N in NORMAL. It will now swing up to the O. That is as far as I let it go before I crank down windows and run the heater full blast. Running the heater will bring the temps back down to the N. Water pump was replace a year and a half ago. It is good since the heater core has coolant flowing through it. I replaced the thermostat with a 195 degree one. It is good, it opens up in boiling water. Thats what came up on the computer at Autozone. I believe the 300 takes a 180 degree one (someone confirm this please). Where could my problem lie. This problem just cropped up, not gradual so i don't belive the radiator is plugged. On a recent off road trip my temps spiked up like i described above and when i stopped my upper hose was flattened. Didn't check the lower hose (still can't figure out why i did not). I checked the hoses when the temps where up, and noticed they were both hot to the touch. I am confused on this problem. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
The upper hose flattening puzzles me. the discharge to the radiator is the upper hose, the lower hose should be the one that is doing that because that is the outlet from the radiator to the block. Are you sure you don't have the wrong water pump? The ones with a serpentine belt turn opposite the engine rotation where the others turn the same as the engine rotation. I found it ! Belt was on right, looked at the backside of the radiator and it was plugged full of MUD. A Pabst and a short time with a garden hose fixed that right up. Here's a tip I will pass along. Whenever you go off roadin / muddin, don't forget to check your radiator, I was amazed at how much I had gunked up in there.
